20 handy hints for cutting back on waste and making your food last longer.
1. Keep coriander fresher for longer by storing it in the fridge in a half filled jar of cold water. Cover tightly with plastic and change the water every day. 
2. Make your cucumber last by placing the stalk end in a small container of water and standing it in the fridge door.
3. Keep lemons in the fridge in a loosely tied plastic bag for freshness. Bring to room temperature before use. 
4. Eat up stale chocolate cake, by microwaving it for 20 seconds per slice. It turns into a delicious fudgy treat. 
5. Love baking your own bread? Add leftover breakfast cereal crumbs from the bottom of the cereal boxes to the ingredients in the breadmaker. It adds texture without making the bread taste sweet. 
6. Put soft carrots in a glass of water in the fridge and they’ll perk up in no time! 
7. Store green beans in a loosely tied plastic bag to keep them fresher for longer. 
8. Deseed and chop spare chillies and add the same number of crushed garlic cloves. Pop in an airtight container and freeze. 
9. Covering cauliflower either with its own leaves or a plastic bag stops it going brown.
10. Cooking for a big celebration and want to save time? Part boil spuds, roast in oil and then freeze. You can pop them in the oven to heat through on the day.
11. Adding a few grains of rice to your salt shaker will stop it going damp. 
12. Make your fresh parsley last for more than 10 days by storing it cleaned and washed in a plastic bag between layers of kitchen paper.
13. Remove the bad apple from the bowl. Keep fruit that is ripening more quickly away from your other fruit.
14. Keep stilton and Parmesan cheese rinds and stir into soups, sauces and casseroles to add flavour. Pop them out before serving. 
15. Freeze leftover coconut milk, wine, coffee and cream separately into ice trays. Pop out and store in labelled freezer bags ready to use in recipes another day. 
16. Ripe bananas taste great when added to lentil or vegetable curries, bringing a subtle fruity flavour to dishes.
17. Use fromage frais in mashed potato instead of butter or milk.
18. Soft leaf herbs such as tarragon and basil make delicious scented oils. Add to olive oil and store in the fridge 
19. Roll citrus fruit on a hard surface with your hand. This makes them easier to squeeze when cut.
20. Break iceberg lettuce up with your hands and store in a bowl of cold water in the fridge. It will stay fresh and crispy for longer.
